Daily Dirt – 3/22/17

Yesterday was wild – I expect more of the same today. Here are some things that I’ve heard…

  • The two hottest names on Cleveland State’s radar right now are Wyoming assistant Jermaine Kimbrough and Fairmont State (WVa.) head coach Jerrod Calhoun. Kimbrough spent nine seasons as an assistant at Cleveland State under Gary Waters, and was a very popular figure on campus. Calhoun is a Cleveland native whose squad is currently 32-2 and playing in the DII Elite 8 tonight. He has amassed a 122-37 record in his five seasons at Fairmont State.
  • I can confirm that Yanni Hufnagel is no longer an assistant at Nevada. He joined Eric Musselman’s staff last spring after serving as an assistant at Cal. Hufnagel has also worked at Vanderbilt and Harvard.
  • It sounds like new NC State head coach Kevin Keatts will hire Miami’s James Johnson as an assistant coach. Johnson, the former head coach at Virginia Tech, was a college teammate of Keatts at Ferrum College in the early ’90’s.
  • I have heard from a great source that DII Flagler College is wrapping up on campus interviews in their search to replace recently retired Bo Clark. I have heard that four candidates have/will interview on campus, and they expect to have a coach in place around the first week of April.
