Daily Dirt – 4/11/11

Here are a few things to start off the week….

It sounds like new Georgia State head coach Ron Hunter is in discussions to add Eastern Kentucky associate head coach Everick Sullivan and UTEP program coordinator Claude Pardue to his staff. Sullivan played at Louisville and has been at EKU since 1998. Pardue was a GA at GSU before coming to UTEP, and played at Emory in Atlanta.

Emporia State is close to naming a new head coach. Sources tell me that the choice here will be Boise State assistant Shaun Vandiver. An announcement is expected at a 3:00pm press conference today. Vandiver has also been an assistant at Wyoming, Bowling Green, and Northern Colorado. He was the 25th pick in the 1991 NBA draft.

Names that I’ve heard as possible assistants at UNLV are former Runnin’ Rebel Stacey Augmon and San Diego State assistant Justin Hutson. Augmon was the 9th pick in the 1991 draft and played 15 seasons in the NBA. He is currently an assistant with the Nuggets. Apparently the 1991 NBA draft is a theme today – maybe Kenny Anderson (#2 in 1991) will get a job today too – he’s been out there looking.

I’ve heard that Mike Newell is in the mix for the job at West Alabama. Newell has been the head coach at University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Lamar, Oklahoma (interim), Southern-Shreveport, and most recently, Arkansas-Monticello.

Look for Texas State assistant Terrance Rencher to be involved with the open assistant spot at Texas. Rencher is the all-time leading scorer for the Longhorns and was drafted the the second round of the 1995 NBA draft (almost another class of ’91!) He looks to be at the top of the list to replace Rodney Terry who recently took the Fresno State job.

UNC-Wilmington assistant Kevin Norris is leaving the program to become the associate head coach at Florida Gulf Coast. Norris played at Miami and has been an assistant at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. He would become the first hire for new FGCU head coach Andy Enfield.
