So Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion…… I’m just throwing this out there now – I’m willing to listen to anyone who wants to buy HoopDirt for $1 billion. Let the bidding begin…
It has been a crazy 24 hours in the “dirt” world. Here are a bunch of things that I’ve heard.
• Multiple sources are reporting that Missouri assistant Isaac Chew is going to accept a spot on the staff at Illinois. Chew is a Chicago native who was the Chicago Public League Player of the Year his senior year at Wells HS. Before joining Frank Haith’s staff Mizzou staff last spring, he was an assistant to Billy Kennedy at Murray State. The official announcement is expected today.
• I have heard that UC-Davis assistant Chris Davis is involved with a spot on Keno Davis’ staff at Central Michigan. Chris Davis spent three seasons with Keno Davis at Providence and was also his assistant at Drake for one season. CD is a Michigan grad who has also worked at Western Michigan and Grand Valley State (MI).
• It sounds like Jay Spoonhour is busy trying to assemble his staff at Eastern Illinois. I have heard that he has reached out to veteran coach Bob Sunvold as well as Kent State assistant Bobby Steinburg. Sunvold is the former head coach at UMKC and Central Missouri. He has also been an assistant at Iowa State, Missouri, and Toledo. I’ve heard that Spoonhour wants Steinburg as his associate head coach and is trying to put together a great package to lure him away from Kent State.
• I can confirm that Brescia University (KY) head coach Joe Pechota has resigned and will become the next head coach at Siena Heights (MI). Pechota is a Michigan native who has also worked at Ferris State (MI) and Alma College (MI). He played at Concordia College – a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (the league that Siena Heights is in). Pechota also spent six seasons as a DI assistant at IPFW.
• We have the Southern Poly head coaching job posted in our job section. According to a great source, it sounds like this is just a formality. By all accounts, Interim head coach Tommy Dillon will be retained – he went 25-7 this past season and took SPSU to the NAIA Sweet 16. They were ranked as high as #3 in this nation this past season. Because SPSU is a state school, the job must be posted – I wouldn’t waste your time if you are thinking of applying for this one!
• John Herchek, a long-time HS coach in Ohio is leaving to join the staff at Hiram College. Herchek spent the past 33-years at Waterloo HS and amassed a 390-332 record. He was also the AD at Waterloo.
• The search at the State College of Florida is winding down. The phone interviews have wrapped up, and on-campus interviews are being held this week. I can confirm that there are four candidates who have been invited to campus. The SCF job is a part-time gig, and the new head coach is expected to be named next week.
