Early in the search at Wagner, but two names making the rounds are current Wagner assistant Winston Smith, and Seton Hall assistant Donald Copeland. Smith has been at Wagner for the past four seasons, and has also been an assistant at St. Francis (PA), Drexel, Youngstown St., FDU, and Hofstra. Copeland joined the SHU basketball staff last season after six years at Wagner. He played at SHU, and at St. Anthony’s for Bob Hurley, Sr. I’ve also heard that two small college head coaches could/will be involved here.
Word on the street is that UC Riverside associate head coach Matt Czepil is in the mix to join David Patrick’s staff at Sacramento State. Czepil was on Patrick’s staff at UCR, and remained after Patrick departed to become an assistant at Arkansas back in 2020. Both Czepil and Patrick are Australian natives.
Allen Edwards to UMass as an assistant is now a done deal. Edwards, the former head coach at Wyoming, had been an assistant at Loyola Marymount for the past two seasons. He played for new UMass head coach Frank Martin at Miami Senior HS back in the early 1990’s.
An early name to replace Edwards at LMU is former Pepperdine assistant Reggie Morris, Jr. Since departing the Pepperdine staff in 2019, Morris has been the head coach at Fairfax HS in Los Angeles. More on this one as I hear it.
In yesterday’s JUCO DIRT, I said that Dodge City’s Jake Williams will be hired as an assistant at Milwaukee. Sounds like he won’t be the last JUCO head coach on the move to a DI. It sounds like Missouri and Louisiana Tech could be the next two landing spots for two really good coaches (with players). Stay tuned…
For those who don’t follow me on Twitter (@HD_DirtKing), just sharing what I tweeted last night…from the prep level: Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) will hire Mike Shelton as their new boy’s basketball coach. Shelton was most recently the Head Coach at Governors (MA) and also spent time as the Head Coach at Park Tudor (IN) and Williston Northampton (MA). He also spent time as the video coordinator for Pat Kelsey at C of C, and as an assistant at D2 New Haven and D3 Wesleyan.
I’ve got a bunch of small college search updates that I will try to get up later today.
