Daily Dirt 4/15/11

Some end of the week chatter….

New Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak is going to add Andy Hill to his staff. Hill previously worked for Krystkowiak at Montana (and has remained on staff there). He will join the Utah staff as either the third assistant coach or the director of basketball operations. Also, former Utah standout and current St. Louis assistant Alex Jensen has turned down an offer to join Krystkowiak’s staff. He will instead be promoted to the top assistant at St. Louis replacing Porter Moser (who took the Loyola job).

It sounds like Middle Tennessee assistant Rob Moxley will be headed to NC State. Moxley spent 12 seasons at UNC-Charlotte he worked with new NC State assistants Bobby Lutz and Orlando Early.

Speaking of NC State / MTSU, it looks we have a trade – with Moxley going to NC State, former NC State assistant Monte Towe is headed to Middle Tennessee. Techincally, Towe is replacing Al Pinkins who just departed for Ole Miss, but it’s a trade in my book. Towe was the head coach at New Orleans from 2002-2006.

I said in my blog yesterday that Texas Southern coach Tony Harvey and former Utah coach Jim Boylen have turned down the opportunity to interview at Eastern Michigan. I finally found someone who has agreed interviewed there. I can confirm that Grand Valley State head coach Ric Wesley is interviewing at EMU today. He is a Central Michigan grad and has a 172-47 record in 7 seasons at GVSU.

I have heard that Sam Kirby from Canada CC in California will be joining the staff at Cal Poly SLO. Kirby is a California native who played at Seattle and also worked as an assistant at Shoreline CC.

New Dayton head coach Archie Miller is going to hire former Loyola assistant Bill Comar as the director of operations. Comar worked on Oliver Purnell’s staff at Dayton from 1997-2001, and also was director of operations for seven years at Xavier under Thad Matta and Sean Miller (Archie’s older brother).

The two leaders for Western Oregon appear to be San Francisco assistant Michael Lee and Sacramento State assistant Brady Bergeson. Lee played at Kansas and has also been an assistant at Gardner-Webb. Bergeson has been at Sac. St. for the past three seasons, and spent six seasons on the staff at Metro State.

Sources have told me that the finalists at Lewis and Clark College are Jim Roffler (head coach Lower Columbia College), Jared Phay (head coach North Idaho College), and George Pfeifer (former head coach at Idaho and Montana State-Billings). Not sure who the leader is here, but I’ve heard that Pfeifer and the AD are tight.
