Daily Dirt – 4/3/19

Some things that I’ve heard as guys get ready to head to sunny Minneapolis…

  • Don’t let anyone fool you…Buzz to A&M has been done for a while.
  • I tweeted about this one last night…sounds like it’s now done – Rutgers assistant Jay Young to Fairfield. Jay and I were on the same staff a loooong time ago at Northeastern – great hire for the Stags!

  • Interviews at BYU are underway. Apparently being an LDS church member is a requirement for this one. Utah Jazz assistant Alex Jensen has interviewed, and Mark Pope is expected to interview as well. They are both LDS members and at this point believed to be the top two candidates.
  • I’ve mentioned the search at Idaho State a few times since Sunday. I have now heard that Northern Colorado associate head coach Steve Smiley is in the mix here as well. Smiley has been at Northern Colorado since 2016, and was an assistant at Weber State before that.

  • Casey Shaw, who had spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Vanderbilt, has been named as the head basketball coach at Davidson Academy in Nashville. He’s the brother-in-law of former Vandy head coach Bryce Drew.

  • Some names that I’ve heard surrounding the opening at DII Coker College (SC): Stephen Cox (former assistant coach Kennesaw State), Jarred Merrill (former assistant coach Mercer), Mike Summey (assistant coach Bowling Green), and Jason Taylor (interim head coach Tennessee Tech).

  • I have heard that Fort Lewis College associate head coach Daniel Steffensen is in the mix with the open head coach spot at Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Colorado State Pueblo. More on this search as I hear it.
