Daily Dirt – 4/5/22

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

Word on the street is that Elon head coach Mike Schrage is the leader to replace Nolan Smith (headed to Louisville) on Jon Scheyer’s staff at Duke. He had previously worked in an administrative role under Coach K from 2002-08, and has been the head coach at Elon since 2019). Other names being tossed around are former Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski (former Duke point guard and long-time Blue Devils assistant), and current Director of Player Development Amile Jefferson (another former Duke player).

A name that keeps popping up for the vacant Alabama A&M job is current D2 Miles College (AL) head coach Fred Watson. Last season, Miles led his squad to a 24-5 (17-1 SIAC) record, and lost to Kentucky on the road by 9 (after leading by 7 at the half). He is 69-18 in his three seasons at Miles. More on this search as I hear it.

Staying in the SWAC…the search at Alabama A&M is not moving along as quickly as Alabama State’s search. However, A&M did announce their search committee (HERE), and I’ve heard that interviews will begin shortly.

Names that I’ve heard in the mix for spots on the new staff at Murray State are Morehead State assistant Jonathan Mattox, Akron DBO Cole Christian, and former East Carolina assistant Antwon Jackson. More here soon.

I have heard that the search at NJCAA D1 USC Salkahatchie is down to three candidates, with on campus interviews taking place yesterday, Thursday, and Friday. It sounds like current interim head coach Matthew Bennett is in the mix. He led his team to a 19-13 record this past season, and was named the Region 10 Coach of the Year.
