Daily Dirt – 4/9/19

A few quick hitters after a late night watching a great National Championship game…

  • I have heard that Todd Abernathy will be hired as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic (replacing Erik Pastrana who departed for Oklahoma State). The current head coach at Trinity International (IL), Abernathy had spent four seasons as an assistant to Andy Kennedy at Ole Miss. Seems to be an Indiana connection here – FAU head coach Dusty May worked as a manager for Bob Knight, while Abernathy’s father played for Knight on the 1976 National Championship team.

  • It sounds like Toledo assistant Kyle Barlow is in the mix to join Jeff Boals new staff at Ohio. He has been at Toledo for the past five seasons, and was a graduate manager at Michigan before that.

  • A lot of chatter surrounding current DII Western Oregon head coach Jim Shaw joining Kyle Smith’s staff at Washington State. Before taking over at WOU four seasons ago, Shaw had been an assistant at St. Mary’s, Washington, Oklahoma, Portland, and Idaho State.

  • The search at Idaho State is getting closer to wrapping up. College of Southern Idaho head coach Jared Phay interviewed late last week. Three  MM assistants have also interviewed. Sounds like the decision is coming soon…

  • Staying in the DII Great Northwest Athletic Conference, I have heard that interviews are underway at DII Concorida University Portland. It sounds like a current assistant in the GNAC kicks off the interviews today.

  • Final results from the 2019 HoopDirt.com March Madness Challenge presented by MyPlay can be found HERE. Thanks to all who played!!
