Daily Dirt – 5/10/21

Some quick hitters to kick off the week…

I have heard that Sam Houston State assistant Phil Forte will join the staff at UTRGV. Forte had been an assistant at SHSU for the past two seasons, and was a grad assistant at St. Louis before that. *UPDATE*: This is now official – UTRGV released the announcement this afternoon HERE.

A bunch of assistants on the move in the Ivy league. Will roll with some of these moves shortly, but can confirm that one Ivy assistant will wind up at Howard.

I have heard that D3 Bowdoin could have interviews wrapped up this week. It sounds like there are at least five finalists. The names that I have heard are former George Mason (and NESCAC rival Williams College) head coach Dave Paulsen, Texas A&M video Coordinator Alex Lloyd, Nichols College head coach Brandon Linton (a former Bowdoin assistant), RPI head coach Mark Gilbride (played for his father Tim at Bowdoin), and a current D3 head coach from the Midwest.

D3 Tufts University is also close to wrapping up their search as well. The only names that I have here so far are Linton, and current Jumbo’s interim head coach Matt Malone. Working on the rest now.

D3 Ithaca College has started initial phone interviews, and will moving to more in-depth Zoom interviews shortly. Most of the names that I’ve heard so far are D3 assistants. More here as it whittles down.

I have heard that a D2 assistant from the PSAC has gotten the D3 Delaware Valley University job. Working to confirm this one. *UPDATE* East Stroudsburg University (PSAC) assistant Muhamadou Kaba is the choice here. Full story HERE.

D2 UNC Pembroke associate head coach Tony Jones has resigned, and will become a HS coach in the area. He had been on the UNCP staff for the past seven years, and had served as the interim head coach during the 2019-20 season.

A lot of chatter out there that Neosho CC (KS) head coach Jeremy Coombs is the leader at Barton CC (KS). Coombs has been at Neosho for the past 14-seasons, and is the all-time wins leader there. More on this one as I hear it.

I mentioned the search at Seward County CC (KS) in last week’s JUCO DIRT. I have heard from great sources here, and it sounds like all three finalists are current JUCO head coaches. One works in the Jayhawk Conference, while the other two are NJCAA D1 head coaches from different regions. This one could be wrapped up shortly.

Former Charlotte head coach (and Ohio State assistant) Alan Major is coaching the Rwanda entry in the NBA-affiliated Basketball Africa League. The league, which is playing in a bubble in Africa, tips off games this week, which will run through the end of the month.

Page Moir, who retired back in 2016 after 27 years as the head coach at D3 Roanoke College (VA), has landed in the HS ranks. He will take over at North Cross HS in Roanoke. The veteran coach won 428 games during his time at RC, and captured 6 ODAC titles.
