Daily Dirt – 5/14/12

I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day! Here is some “dirt” for the beginning of the week…

• It wasn’t a very long stay for Chris Beard at Lamar State – Port Arthur. Just days after accepting the job at there, he has resigned. He has said publically that he wants to stay closer to home…my sources tell me that he is involved with the vacant job at McMurray. Lamar Sate – Port Arthur AD Scott Street wasted no time in replacing Beard…he has hired Lance Madison who was an assistant at Oklahoma City University. Madison was the runner-up to Beard initially.

• I have heard from two separate sources that Utah DBO Randy Baruth will be the next head coach at Saginaw Valley State. Baruth also spent two years at Colorado State after a five-year stint as an assistant coach at Northern State University under Don Meyer, the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history. Look for the official announcement sometime this week.

• The interviews at Trinity Valley are underway. I have heard the following coaches are involved: Kris Baumann (Head Coach Garden City), Jeff Drinkwine (Former Head Coach Evergreen State), Pat Rafferty (Former Head Coach Midland JC, former assistant Louisville), and Bill Foy (Former Head Coach Paris JC, former assistant North Texas). According to my source, the TVCC administration wants someone with “national tournament” experience. More on this as the search continues…

• New Minnesota-Duluth head coach Matt Bowen has begun to assemble his staff. Following Bowen to UM-Duluth from Bemidji State is graduate assistant Kevin Williamson. Williamson was previously an assistant at Glendale CC and before that was a teacher and high school coach in California and Arizona.

• Speaking of Bemidji State…I have heard that Ryan Montgomery, Bowen’s top assistant at Bemidji State University, will serve as the interim head coach there during the search process. He will also be a candidate for the job. Montgomery has been on staff there for the past four seasons.

• According to a source, former Canisius assistant Rob Norris has accepted a job as a women’s assistant at Eastern Michigan. Before Canisius, Norris had spent time on Pat Kennedy’s staffs at Towson, Montana, and Depaul.

• I have heard that Murray State video coordinator Josh Gibson is involved with an assistant position at Indiana University East. He has also worked at Sewanee, Maryville, and Indiana University Southeast.
