Daily Dirt – 5/16/11

Pretty busy weekend on the “dirt” front – here are some of the things that I’ve heard….

The University of Mary (ND) has scheduled a 2pm press conference for this afternoon to name their next head coach. My source tells me that the choice will be assistant coach Jevin Budde. He will replace Randall Herbst who resigned last month to accept an assistant job at Nebraska-Omaha (transitioning to DI). Budde has been assistant at U-Mary for the past two seasons. He has also been an assistant at Bethany Lutheran and Nebraska-Omaha.

I mentioned last week that Kansas State assistant Delonte Hill was being pursued by new Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. From what I’ve heard, they met Saturday morning to discuss the job. I’m not sure that Maryland can match the $420K+ that Hill is making at K-State, but it sounds like Hill may take a hometown discount to return to the Maryland area. Also, Scott Spinelli who served as the associate head coach at Texas A&M, will be coming to College Park with Turgeon.

Add Williams College head coach Mike Maker to the growing list at Vermont. According to my source, he was contacted by UVM, and has expressed interest in the job. He is 76-14 in three seasons at Williams, including an NCAA DIII Final Four appearance this past season. As I reported on Friday, Washington assistant Ralph Chillious is also in the mix and Middlebury coach Jeff Brown has said that he’s not interested.

According to a well placed source, look for South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn to get involved with the job at Murray State. Horn is starting to feel some heat at USC, and had a lot of success in the state of Kentucky – 111-48 in 5 seasons at Western Kentucky.

George Mason has hired former George Washington assistant Roland Houston. Houston spent the past seven seasons at GW, and worked at LaSalle before that. He had multiple offers for assistant spots after the staff at GW was released last month. Houston will bring his nephew Erik Copes to George Mason with him. Copes is one of the top ranked big men in the class of 2011, and had committed to GW before Houston left.

I’ve heard that there will be some staff changes at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It sounds like Chad Boudreau will take over the top assistant spot, Ronnie Jones will move into an assistant coaching role from video coordinator, and Dejan Matic will move from academic mentor to video coordinator.
