Daily Dirt – 5/5/11

Happy Cinco De Mayo! Quick fact….Cinco De Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day like many believe. Cinco De Mayo is actually the date that the Mexican Army smashed the French in the Battle of Puebla (1862). Mexican Independence Day takes place on September 16. Anyway, I will hoist a few Corona’s back tonight in honor of our brothers to the south!

Here’s what I’ve got so far….

I’ve heard that Rhode Island head coach Bob Walsh is possibly the leader for an assistant spot on Jim Baron’s staff at URI. Walsh has been involved at with the head coaching searches at Manhattan and Assumption this off-season. Walsh is 135-43 in his six seasons at DIII RIC. He is also a former Providence College assistant. Others who I’ve heard that have inquired about the job / talked to Baron about it are former George Washington assistant Roland Houston and Northeastern assistant Antonio Reynolds-Dean. They are both URI alums.

There may be more changes coming to the staff at Tulsa. Former Colgate head coach Emmett Davis was hired this week to replace David Cason who accepted a job at Vanderbilt. It now sounds like head coach Doug Wojcik is looking for a replacement for assistant Andy Kohut. He appears to be pursuing Texas State Terrance Rencher. Rencher has been a hot name this off-season – he is the all-time leading scorer at Texas (2,306 points).

Jeff Dunlap has been hired as the DBO at NC State. Dunlap has worked at Western Michigan, Georgia, and Alabama. Most recently, he worked for Big Shots, organizing exposure camps across the country.

It sounds like former Loyola (IL) DBO Pat Monaghan will become an assistant at DII Minnesota-Mankato. He was an assistant at Coffeyville (KS) JC before his stint at Loyola.
