Daily Dirt – 6/1/12

Here’s the "dirt" for the first day of June…

• It sounds like Rider assistant Ben Luber will be heading to Binghamton with Tommy Dempsey. Luber is a former point guard at Penn State who joined Dempsey’s staff at Rider in 2009.

• I have heard that Delaware assistant Jeff Rafferty is involved with a spot on Tom Herrion’s staff at Marshall. Prior to his stint at Delaware, Rafferty served on Bill Herrion’s staff at New Hampshire. He has been at Delaware since 2007. The spot at Marshall opened up when assistant Jorge Fernandez resigned last week.

• It sounds like Iona assistant Mark Calzonetti could land on Jack Perri’s new staff at LIU. Calzonetti and Perri are both Bentley alums. Before his two seasons at Iona, Calzonetti spent 11 seasons on the staff at Monmouth, and 7 seasons at Fairfield.

• Justin Phelps will be named director of basketball operations at Southern Mississippi. Phelps moves to Southern Miss after serving in the same capacity at the University of South Carolina for one season under Darrin Horn. Phelps started the All-American Junior College Showcase and was also a staffer at Kent State for Jim Christian.

• Matt Fava has been hired as the graduate assistant coach at Castleton State College (VT). Fava was the assistant coach at Connecticut College for the past three seasons. He also served one year as the student assistant coach (2008-2009) and two as the head manager (2006-2008) for the Camels.

• Taking Fava’s place at Conn College will be Chris McHugh. McHugh had been the assistant at Mount Saint Mary College (NY) for three years (2009-2012). Prior to entering the coaching ranks, McHugh played four years at Washington & Lee University and was the team captain as a senior.
