Daily Dirt – 6/1/23

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

I can confirm that Niagara will promote Austin Kelley from Director of Basketball Operations to Assistant Coach. Kelley has been the DBO at Niagara since 2020, and had spent the previous two seasons on the staff as George Washington as the Director of Operations and Recruiting Coordinator. An official announcement is expected shortly.

I have heard that Marist assistant Dorian Long is on the move, and will join the staff at NC A&T. Long started at as the DBO at Marist back in 2018, and was promoted to assistant coach in 2021. Prior to his time at Marist, Long was the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator on former NBA player Doug Overton’s staff at Lincoln University. He also served as the DBO at James Madison.

Speaking of NC A&T, I have also heard that former UConn assistant Ricky Moore will be hired as an assistant there. Moore was a 3X captain at UConn, and a member of their 1998-99 National Championship squad. Following his professional playing career, he spent two seasons as an assistant at Dartmouth, and then spent 2012-18 on the staff at his alma mater. Moore has most recently served as the head boys’ basketball coach at Northwest Carrabus High School in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Jay Spoonhour has been hired as an assistant at Missouri State (Springfield Times-Leader had it first HERE). Spoonhour spent 2012-21 as the head coach at Eastern Illinois, and has also worked at UNLV, Missouri, UTSA, and St. Louis. The son of legendary head coach Charlie Spoonhour, Jay also served as the head coach at Wabash Valley and Moberly Area CC. He won the 2000-01 NJCAA D1 National Championship while at Wabash.

D2 Cal State San Marcos is done. Been given the green light to roll with it early next week. Stay tuned…

I have heard a good Midwest JUCO is opening – head coach taking a D1 assistant job. More here soon.
