Busy day today – here are some of the things that I’ve heard…
• With the resignation of Steve Gosar at the College of Southern Idaho (http://www.hoopdirt.com/news/755c0ed2/csi-coach-steps-down/…), multiple sources are saying that newly hired assistant Jeremy Cox will become the next head coach there. Cox, who was most recently an assistant at Texas Tech, has also been a high major assistant at Kentucky, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and South Florida. Additionally, Cox has been the head coach at Garden City College (KS), and Arkansas- Ft. Smith.
• Last night we posted the story about the staff changes at New Mexico State (http://www.hoopdirt.com/news/417f7d48/new-mexico-state-staff…). The story released by NMSU failed to mention what happened to the guys that Aerick Sanders and Eric Brand replaced. Sanders replaced Tony Delk as an assistant – Delk departed for personal reasons. Apparently he wanted to move closer to family in the south. Brand replaced Ryan Mack as the Coordinator of Player Development – Mack has become the head coach at Shelbyville High School (IN).
• I have heard that Cal State Bakersfield assistant Jeff Conarroe is in the mix to become the DBO at Louisiana Tech. Conarroe was a staffer at Ole Miss when LA Tech head coach Michael White was an assistant there.
• Speaking of DBO’s…I have heard that former Virginia Tech star Ace Custis is involved with the DBO spot at his alma mater. Custis played at Va. Tech from 1993-1997 – he finished his career with 1,706 points and 1,777 rebounds. He is one of four Hokies to have his number retired, and has been playing professionally overseas since he graduated.
• I have heard from two separate sources that Queens College (NY) is down to two finalists. One is a DIII head coach from Vermont and the other is a DII head coach who is from the NY/NJ area. The official announcement is expected on Thursday.
• Evan Lavery has joined the staff at Rock Valley College (IL). He spent last season as an assistant at Rockford College (IL). Lavery graduated from Central Methodist University in 2012.
