Craziness over the past few days around here – sorry for the lack of “dirt”. Here’s what I’ve got…
• I can confirm that former Coppin State assistant Jay Dull has become the head coach at Howard CC (MD). He had been at Coppin State since 2005, and was the head coach at McDaniel (MD) before that. I have heard that he will hire former Coppin State DBO Emeka Chiazor as an assistant.
• Speaking of former Coppin State guys…I have heard that former Coppin State associate head coach Keith Johnson will join the staff at Delaware State. Johnson had been on Fang Mitchell’s staff at Coppin State since 2001. He has also served as the head coach at Cheney University (PA) (1989-1995).
• I have heard from a great source that Appalachian State will hire Missouri State University-West Plains assistant Bryan Bender as their new DBO. Before joining the West Plains staff last season, Bender spent seven years at Minnesota. He served in various administrative roles there, including video coordinator and graduate assistant.
• It sounds like University of Denver graduate manager Jared Czech will become the DBO at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Czech is a New Jersey native who joined the Denver staff after his graduation from Manhattanville last year. He has also coached with the New York City Gauchos (AAU) and been a Hoop Group staffer.
• Earlier this week, I mentioned that Clarke (IA) head coach Jerry Drymon was the choice at Central CC (NE) (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/7c89e8cf/daily-dirt-6-23-14/…“>http://hoopdirt.com/blog/7c89e8cf/daily-dirt-6-23-14/……). I can now confirm that he is the new head coach there. I have now also heard that the search at Clarke is moving quickly, and they may already be down to three finalists. The names that I have heard are Jim Blaine (current assistant at Clarke), Justin Einerson (Grand View University assistant and former Clarke assistant), and Nigel Jenkins (Head Coach Waldorf (IA)). I have heard that the Interviews will wrap up July 8th.
• Another follow up from earlier in the week…On Monday, I also mentioned the two finalists at Black Hills State (SD) (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/7c89e8cf/daily-dirt-6-23-14/…“>http://hoopdirt.com/blog/7c89e8cf/daily-dirt-6-23-14/……). I have now heard from two separate sources that Augustana (SD) assistant head coach Jeff Trumbauer is the choice, and has begun negotiating a contract. It sounds like this one could be made official shortly.
• Former Fisk University interim head coach Deajada "Jay" Smith has accepted an assistant spot at Reinhardt University (GA). Smith was an assistant at Fisk for three seasons and was the associate head at Michigan-Dearborn prior to that.
• Bethany (WVa.) will hire Kwasi Amponsah as a graduate assistant. He played at Roanoke College 2009-2013 and was an All-ODAC performer. This past year, he was an assistant at Gar-Field HS (VA).
• I can confirm that WVU Tech assistant Jeff Williamson has departed and will become the head coach at Tamassee-Salem (SC). Last season was his first at WVU Tech. He has also been an assistant at Salem International University.
