Daily Dirt – 7/25/11

Long day on the road today. Here are some things that I’ve heard. …

Former Louisville assistant Walter McCarty was on campus last week interviewing for the head coaching position at SUNY-New Paltz. He was recently let go as an assistant by the Pacers. He spent 10 seasons as a player in the NBA, and was an assistant for Rick Pitino at Louisville for three seasons. He appears to be the leader for the DIII job.

Ryan Mack will be promoted to Coordinator of Player Development at New Mexico State. He spent last season as a graduate assistant in the program. He was a manager at Miami (OH) before NMSU.

John Halas, an assistant at Amherst College (MA) has accepted a position as an assistant at Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep. He played in the ABA, USBL, and PBL after his graduation from Trinity (CT) in 2005. He is the great-great nephew of NFL Hall of Fame coach and owner of the Chicago Bears, George Halas, as well as the son of New England Basketball Hall of Fame coach, Wally Halas.

Spencer Segrest has accepted the GA spot at DIII Mississippi College. He spent the last year as an assistant at Madison Central High School (MS) and has also been an assistant at Ridgeland High School (MS).

New Mexico Highlands University will hire Eric Johnson as an assistant. Johnson is a former assistant at the University of South Dakota. Johnson will replace Jeremy Soria who left to pursue other coaching opportunities.
