Daily Dirt – 8/13/12

Finally back from vacation. Trying to catch-up on a ton of things…

• Crazy situation at Villanova with Doug Martin being forced to resign over a resume flap (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/ef11f6f4/hot-martin-resigns-at-vill…). I’ve got to give credit to one of our readers here…three days before Dana O’Neil broke the story on ESPN, someone sent us all the info on Martin, including rosters from UW-Green Bay (where he said he played), and other links showing the discrepancies in his resume. Since I was on vacation (and Mr. Dirt can’t read), I didn’t see this until I returned. However, I’m not sure if I would have run with the story…our job here is to help coaches, not hurt them (although Coach Martin did hurt himself). I definitely appreciate the tip, and it would have been great to be out in front of this one, but I guess we should leave that to the big boys! If anything good can come of this, it should be a lesson to all of the young coaches out there. Make sure that your resume is legit – you don’t want something to come back to haunt you when you hit the big-time!

• I have heard from a great source that new Lees-McRae head coach Steve Hardin will hire JT Blair and Marcus Wilmoth as assistant coaches. Blair was the DBO at Charleston Southern last season, and Wilmoth was a graduate assistant at Appalachian State.

• I can confirm that Anthony Cooper has been hired as an assistant at Santa Monica College. He spent last season as an assistant at Venice (CA) HS.

• Former Odessa College head coach Dennis Helms has been hired as the head coach at Arlington Heights (TX) HS. Helms was dismissed at Odessa in March after a very successful stint there. In 32 seasons as a JH head coach, Helms has amassed a 728-282 record. He will start at Arlington Heights next week.
