Catching-up on a few things that I’ve heard as the season approaches…

Bruce Hamburger, who spent last season as an assistant at Columbia, has departed the staff and landed at D2 Pace University. The veteran coach has been an assistant at Seton Hall, FDU, and St. Peter’s. He also spent 11-seasons (1995-2006) as the head coach at D3 Kean University, and also had a stint as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty (WNBA).

Word on the street is that Marlon London will be hired as the Director of Scouting at UIC. London, who played at both Kansas and DePaul, has spent the past four seasons as an assistant at D3 North Park University in Chicago. He also worked at D2 Lewis University, and spent time at the HS level in Illinois.

I have heard that new Clark Atlanta head coach Alfred Jordan has hired his staff. It sounds like Samir St. Clair, and Earl Lawrence will serve as assistant coaches, while Julius Sudds will assume the DBO role. St. Clair was most recently the head coach at Charles Drew Charter School in Atlanta. His squad captured the GHSA Class A State Championship last season. Lawrence is a CAU alum who spent last season as an assistant at Young Harris College. He has also been an assistant at Central Baptist College. Sudds is also a CAU alum who has been coaching and teaching at the HS level. An official announcement on these moves is expected shortly.

Back on 9/1, I mentioned the final group at D3 Marywood University. I can now confirm that Randolph-Macon associate head coach Dave Matturro has withdrawn from consideration. He is on the move, and will be taking a D2 assistant job. More on this one soon…

I have heard that NJCAA D1 Central Georgia Tech has had three candidates on campus to interview for the vacant head coach position. Names that I’ve heard include former Florida National head coach JJ Thatcher, and two current JUCO head coaches from Georgia. They are in the hunt to replace Reco Dawson, who became the head coach at Shelton State back in August. Sounds like this one will be wrapped up shortly.

Fredonia State has hired Jerome Moss as an assistant coach. Moss has most recently been a head coach in the PBL (Chautauqua Hurricane), and spent time as the head women’s basketball coach at Buffalo State. This will be the second stint for Moss as an assistant on the men’s side at his alma mater. He also spent time as an assistant with the Fredonia women.

There are now over 150 HS, Prep, and JUCO programs listed in our Fall ’22 Open Gym schedules section. If you would like yours included, email me the info: [email protected].
