Daily Dirt – 9/28/11

Here are a few things that I’ve heard today as I recover from my bout with death….

According to the Twitter account of Glenville State head coach Stephen Dye, he has hired former West Virginia standout Joe Mazzulla as an assistant coach. I mentioned in the spring that Mazzulla had an offer from Nova Southeastern to join their staff. He turned it down to try to play overseas. When that didn’t pan out, GSC came calling. Dye’s tweet – dye12 “Today was a great day for the Pioneer Basketball program. Today I hired @Jmazzulla21 as an assistant coach!”

According to multiple sources, former Old Dominion head coach Jeff Capel, Sr. will be hired as an assistant by the Philadelphia 76ers. The hiring won’t be made official until the NBA Board of Governors approves the sale of the Sixers to a group headed by Joshua Harris. That approval is expected to happen sometime in the next few weeks. Capel holds a career record of 201-162 in 12 seasons as a college head coach. In addition to his stint at ODU, he was the head coach at NC A&T, and Fayetteville State.

Trying to find out what is going on at Southern Polytechnic. Jeff Jones, who had been at the helm for the past six season, is no longer listed as the head coach on SPSU’s website. My source tipped me off that he was removed – if you go to the website (http://www.spsu.edu/mensbasketball/coachingstaff/…), only associate head coach Tommy Dillon and assistant Frankie Willingham are listed. I’ve been trying all day to get the scoop here, but I’ve got nothing. Let me know if anyone hears anything on this one.

Former St. Leo assistant Fred Lewis, Sr. has been hired as the head coach at Middleton (FL) HS. Lewis played on NCAA Tournament teams at the University of South Florida in 1990 and 1992. He is taking over a program that went 3-17 last season.
