Daily Dirt II – 4/4/12

Busy day today….The DirtKing was on the hunt – we need a point guard for next season and may have found him! Got back to the office and I had a bunch of emails and messages. Here are some of the things that happened while I was out…

• It appears that Indiana assistant Benny Seltzer is the leader at Samford. He has been an assistant to Tom Crean at Indiana and Marquette, and has also worked at Oklahoma. Seltzer is a native of Birmingham, Alabama – where Samford is located. An announcement could come as early as tomorrow.

• Former Ohio assistant Jamall Walker has joined John Groce at Illinois. Sources have already seen him on campus. It also sounds like Dustin Ford will be joining the Illini staff as well. Ford spent the past four seasons at Ohio (his alma mater). He is the son of Muskingum College head coach Gene Ford, while his brother, Geno, is the head coach at Bradley University.

• Pat Kelsey is busy assembling his staff at Winthrop. I’ve heard that former Furman assistant Brian Thornton and Brevard College head coach Mark Prosser are both involved here. Thornton played at Xavier when Kelsey was an assistant there, and later worked with Kelsey as the DBO on Chris Mack’s staff. Prosser is the son of the late Skip Prosser – the former head coach at Xavier and Wake Forest. Prosser just finished his first season at Brevard (5-23).

• I can confirm that new Nebraska head coach Tim Miles has hired Northern Iowa assistant Ben Johnson. Johnson has been at UNI for the past four seasons. He has also worked at Texas- Pan American and Dayton. Johnson played for two seasons at both Northwestern and Michigan.

• I mentioned earlier today that former Tulsa assistant Jeremy Ballard was involved at UNC-Greensboro – now it sounds like he’s headed to VCU where he will replace Jamion Christian who was recently hired as the head coach Mt. St. Mary’s.

• I also talked about the Terrance Rencher to College of Charleston rumors this morning. According to multiple sources, he is waiting to see if his his former HS teammate Orlando Antigua gets the Duquesne gig. The pair starred at St. Raymond’s in the Bronx in the early 1990’s.
