Busy weekend…here are some things that I’ve heard…
- I keep hearing UCLA assistant coach David Grace’s name mentioned at Fresno State. He has been on Steve Alford’s staff since 2013, and has also been an assistant at Oregon, San Francisco, and Sacramento State. Grace spent 20 years in the Air Force before beginning his collegiate coaching career.
- Tennessee associate head coach Rob Lanier is now the HOT name at East Carolina. The former head coach at Siena has also been an assistant at Texas, Florida, Virginia, and Rutgers. Other names mentioned here are FGCU head coach Joe Dooley and UMBC’s Ryan Odom.
- I have heard Northern Colorado head coach Jeff Linder’s name has been mentioned regarding the opening at San Diego. Before becoming the head coach at UNC back in 2016, he had spent six seasons on Leon Rice’s staff at Boise State. His team is currently 24-12 and still alive in the CIT. I’ve also heard that San Diego’s current acting head coach Sam Scholl is in the mix as well.
- I have heard Mike Schrage’s name at High Point. The current Ohio State assistant has also worked with Chris Holtmann at Butler. Before that, he spent eight seasons as an assistant at Stanford, and served in administrative roles at Duke for nine seasons.
- An early name to keep an eye on at La Salle is Villanova’s Ashley Howard. The Philadelphia native has been at ‘Nova since 2013. He played at Drexel (where he also served as an assistant), and also was an assistant at La Salle from 2004-08.
- Utah State is reportedly closing in on South Dakota head coach Craig Smith. He has been the head coach at South Dakota Since 2014, and has worked for Tim Miles as an assistant at Nebraska, Colorado State, North Dakota State, and Mayville State (ND). Sounds like this could be wrapped up shortly.
- I have heard from a great source that Southern University assistant Chrys Cornelius will depart the Jaguars staff for a position in the NBA G-League. Last season was his first at SU. He has also worked at Green Bay, Eastern Illinois, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, and Western Illinois.
