Dan McNeely has been named Maine Maritime Academy’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
“I am very honored and excited to be selected as the next Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Maine Maritime Academy,” said McNeely. “I would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth True, Steve Peed, and the entire search committee for giving me the opportunity to lead the Men’s Basketball program at such a prestigious institution.”
“Coach McNeely is a thoughtful leader with all of the right values and will prove to be an excellent mentor for our basketball players,” said Director of Athletics, Steve Peed. “The committee most definitely had its work cut out for it with a tremendously deep and talented pool of candidates. In the end, Coach McNeely clearly distinguished himself from that group. He is the right fit for our team, our department, the Academy and the community. We look forward to welcoming Dan and his family into the Maine Maritime family.”
Most recently, McNeely served as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at NCAA Division III member Piedmont College in Georgia for two seasons. During his time at Piedmont, McNeely helped lead the Lions to success on the floor with to back-to-back USA South Championship Tournament appearances and in the classroom as the Lions earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award in 2016.
“From the moment I stepped on campus, I knew that Maine Maritime Academy was a unique and special place, and my family and I are excited to join the Mariner family and community in Castine,” added McNeely.
Prior to his time with Piedmont, McNeely spent three seasons at Manchester University in Indiana where he helped recruit over 30 student-athletes to the program and assisted in the planning and execution of all practices, game plans, and scouting reports.
Before joining Manchester’s coaching staff, McNeely served as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the men’s basketball program at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
McNeely began his coaching career at the high school level in Ohio, while still pursuing his undergraduate degree coaching first at Xenia Christian High School before moving on Waynesville High School.
As a student-athlete at Wittenberg University, McNeely was a member of the 2005-2006 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball National Runner-Up team.
McNeely earned his Bachelor of Science in Management from Wittenberg University in May of 2010 while also minoring in Russian Area Studies. He completed his Master of Science in Health, Exercise, and Sport Science with a concentration in Sport Management in June of 2012 at The Citadel. McNeely also earned his Graduate Certificate in Sport Management from The Citadel.
“I am looking forward to Coach McNeely capitalizing on the growth in competitiveness we have experienced over the past three years and I am confident that he will build us into a consistently successful program on the floor, while maintaining our many successes in the classroom and community,” added Peed.
McNeely will assume his role on Tuesday, August 1.
