Donald Morris, Jr. has been recently named the head coach of the Daniel Webster College men’s basketball program. The announcement was made by DWC Director of Athletics Chris Gilmore.
"We are excited that Donald has accepted the opportunity to guide our men’s basketball program," said Gilmore. "He owns a wealth of coaching experience and his great familiarity with our program and the New England Collegiate Conference will help us both in the short and long term in keeping us competitive for a league championship."
Morris, who becomes the ninth head coach of the program in the NCAA era, will be familiar to Eagle basketball fans as he spent eight combined seasons with conference foe Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. including six as head coach.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to work at such a respected college with student-athletes who are dedicated to getting better and better every day," said Morris. "I have many goals for the team and myself. In the short term, I want to see significant improvements where we become one of the elite teams in the NECC. My goal is to get better every day until we are the NECC champions, and continue to work hard and improve and hopefully make a run in the NCAA tournament."
Morris is a graduate of Lesley, where he finished his collegiate playing career for the Lynx, graduating in 2005. While at Lesley, Morris’s squads produced a number of all-conference honorees, including the first All-American in the University’s history. Moreover, Lesley saw two National Scholar Baller Award Winners, a national award for academic achievement.
As assistant coach with the Lynx, Morris’s club reached the finals of the North Atlantic Conference tournament in 2008, while as head coach, the program posted their third-highest single-season victories total with an 11-win campaign in 2011-12 and reached the NECC semifinal round in 2010. Six of Morris’s former players went on to earn professional contracts internationally.
Prior to his time on the bench at Lesley, Morris spent one season as an assistant coach at fellow NECC member Newbury College.
Morris has also spent a number of years as a coach, instructor, mentor and scout with various basketball programs including the New England Falcons women’s semi-professional program, eight years as director and coach with "Basketball 2 The Limit," an AAU program based in Newton, Mass., and with "Basketball City"," offering youth and men’s programming in Boston, Mass.
Morris is a native of Somerville, Mass. and played at Somerville High before moving on Notre Dame Prep, and spent time collegiately at Dean Junior College and Southern New Hampshire University before completing his career with the Lynx.
