LeTourneau University Athletic Director, Terri Deike, announced on Wednesday the resignation of head men’s basketball coach Bob Davis. "LeTourneau University has been blessed by the coaching, teaching and Christian mentoring provided by Bob Davis," said Deike. "He has touched countless lives, both on and off the court, and will be greatly missed.
Davis recently completed his ninth season as the YellowJackets’ head coach. At LeTourneau, he guided the program to its first-ever berth in the American Southwest Conference tournament and was named as the conference’s East Division Co-Coach of the Year in 2006-07. The YellowJackets reached the conference tournament on three occasions, in 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2012-13. On 21 occasions, LeTourneau University student-athletes were named to the ASC Academic Honor list under the direction of Davis. Four individuals were selected first-team All-ASC East Division, including an ASC East Division Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. In addition to his coaching responsibilities at LeTourneau, Davis has been an instructor in the Kinesiology Department. His leadership has had a significant and lasting impact on the students in the classroom.
"It has been an honor to work with Coach Davis and to witness the eternal impact he has made within our department as well as the university," added Deike.
Prior to coming to LeTourneau, he spent three seasons as the associate coach at NCAA Division I, Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. Before coaching at Liberty, he served for 15 years as the head coach at Eastern Wyoming College, a junior college located in Torrington, Wyo. Davis started his 42-year coaching career in the high school ranks before moving into the college level as an assistant at Colorado State and as the head coach at Chadron State College.
"It has been a hard decision to resign the basketball position at LeTourneau. I have been blessed by the time I have spent as the head men’s basketball coach and as an instructor at this institution. I am very thankful to the many people, who have made significant contributions to me while at LeTourneau," said Davis. "I would like to thank Dr. Austin and Dr. Trogdon for giving me the opportunity to coach and teach at LeTourneau. And yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the friendship and the work of Michael Lewis, who has been a trusted assistant and friend. I am indebted to the support of both Dr. Lunsford and Terri Deike for the opportunity and for everything they have done for me and my family."
To all the students and the student-athletes that I have had the privilege and honor to coach, I appreciate your effort and I have learned much from you," said Davis. "LeTourneau is a special place because the administration, faculty and staff really do view their employment as a Holy Calling."
