Delta State hires graduate assistant

Robert Szorc begins his first season with the Delta State University Men’s Basketball program as a graduate assistant. He comes to the Statesmen after serving as a high school math teacher and basketball coach for the past seven years, five of those as a head coach. For the past three years, Szorc served as the head basketball coach at Wheaton Warrenville South in Wheaton, IL.

Szorc will be involved in all aspects of the Statesmen program and more specifically with strength and conditioning, on the court coaching and perimeter development, basketball operations, and the scouting of opponents.

"I am excited for this opportunity to join the Delta State University family and to work with Coach Boone," Szorc said. "I am honored to assist in the continued success of Statesmen Basketball and its outstanding tradition."

While at Wheaton Warrenville South, Szorc directed all aspects of the basketball program, including fundraising, fall and spring skill development for youth, summer camps, and the development of the program’s feeder schools.

"We are very pleased to have Bob join our Delta State basketball family," said Boone. "He brings a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm to our program. His work ethic and skill set are a perfect fit for us."

Prior to Wheaton Warrenville South, Robert was the head coach at Alleman Catholic High School in Rock Island, Ill. At Alleman Catholic, Szorc directed the program to back to back regionals and advanced to the sweet 16 in only his second year as a head coach. He inherited a program that was coming off a five-win season and led the Pioneers to a 10 game improvement and 15 wins in year two.

Both at Wheaton Warrenville South and Alleman Catholic, he also assisted the baseball programs. He began his teaching career at Marmion Academy in Aurora, IL assisting Rashon Burno who is now an assistant at the University of Florida.

The consummate teacher and coach, Szorc has worked the summer tour at some of the nation’s most noteworthy basketball camps. Including one of the nations’s best teaching camps, the Snow Valley Basketball School in Waverly Iowa, Future Stars in Lake Forest IL, and the prestigious Five Star Basketball Camps.

Robert is a graduate of St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., and Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill.
