The University of Denver Athletic Department and head men’s basketball coach Jeff Wulbrun have mutually agreed to part ways, the two parties announced on Thursday. Assistant coach Shammond Williams will continue to serve as the program’s interim head coach as Vice Chancellor for Athletics Josh Berlo immediately begins a national search.
“On behalf of the University of Denver, and the athletic department, I want to thank Jeff Wulbrun for his effort and commitment to elevating the program in his four seasons in the Mile High City,” Berlo said. “We appreciate Jeff’s dedication to recruiting high-character student-athletes that fit the prestigious academic model and 4D experience that is the foundation of the University of Denver.”
Throughout his four seasons at DU, Wulbrun guided the Pioneers to a 53-74 record and took Denver to the 2024 Summit League Championship game, the program’s first conference title game appearance since 2005. Taking over for a two-win team the season prior to his arrival, Wulbrun led the Pioneers to 11 wins in his debut season in 2021-22, the most by the program since the 2017-18 campaign. A year ago, the Pioneers produced 17 wins, the program’s most since 2012-13, and earned the program’s first Summit League Tournament wins since 2018.
“I’d like to thank Karlton Creech for giving me the opportunity to become the head coach at the University of Denver four years ago,” Wulbrun said. “I have always enjoyed my relationship with prestigious academic institutions, and I believed DU was a great fit for me. It is with tremendous appreciation and gratitude that I thank the players I had the privilege of coaching at DU. I am a better man and coach because of the life experiences we shared together. Finally, I’m very proud of the progress and growth we were able to make as a program in the last four years and I can honestly say I have met and established lifelong relationships with some of the nicest people during my time at DU.”
Prior to his four seasons in Denver, Wulbrun had nearly three decades of experience as an assistant at Stanford, UAB, Virginia Tech, Illinois State and California.
