Donahue joins Barry University Basketball Staff

Kevin Donahue joined the Barry men’s basketball staff for the 2024-25 season as an assistant coach, director of athletics Dr. Scott Smith announced.

Donahue spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Nichols College men’s basketball program in Massachusetts, leading them to a 73-14 record, 46-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

The Bison three straight CCC championships under Donahue and head coach Brock Erickson, extending the overall streak to six straight titles.

The 25-4 Bison won three major awards campaign in 2021-22 as Jakigh Dottin took home CCC Player of the Year while Jaekwon Spencer was tabbed CCC Defensive Player of the Year and Tahmeen Dupree garnered CCC Rookie of the Year honors. Nichols closed the season No. 3 in the NCAA Division III Region II rankings and was No. 6 in scoring offense (88.2 ppg), No. 9 in personal fouls/game (13.1), and No. 43 in assist/turnover ratio (1.28).

In 2022-23, the Bison set school records with 20 straight wins in a 26-6 season that culminated in the NCAA Division III Elite Eight. Upon the completion of the season, all-CCC honors were handed out to a conference-best five members of the team: Matt Alectus (First Team), Quincy Ferebee and Tavon Jones (Second Team), and Ty Rucker and Jakigh Dottin (Third Team). Alectus was also selected as the CCC’s Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference in rebounding, which was also ranked 10th in the nation with the 12th best rebounds-per-game average. On the national scene, the Nichols Bison ranked 9th in the nation for overall team scoring, chalking up more than 87 points per game on average.

Last season, the Bison went 22-4 and 15-1 in the CCC, compiling a program record .938 win percentage in conference. Senior guard Tavon Jones was bestowed with Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team recognition, while junior Dominic Mello earned Second Team honors from the CCC.

“We are excited to add Kevin to our coaching staff,” Barry head coach Butch Estes said. “After a crazy summer that saw three of our former assistant coaches move up, being able to land a coach of this caliber to our staff is exciting. He along with his former boss, Brock Erickson, built a powerhouse at Nichols College. Kevin has a history of recruiting high-level players and then developing them. He will be an important addition as we continue to pursue our goal of a national championship.”

Donahue came to Nichols after a stint at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts (2019-20), where he served as an assistant coach on the varsity team while running the junior varsity program. He helped create practice plans for the varsity program while coordinating player development and film breakdown and analysis.

Prior to his arrival at Northfield, Donahue – a four-year member of the Assumption College men’s basketball team (2009-12) – played professionally in both Spain (2017) and Germany (2017-19). He was the starting guard for CD Aquimisa Carbajosa and helped them capture the 2017 Federacion de Baloncesto de Castille y Leon (FBCYL) Primera regular season title and National Final Four Championship. Donahue was later the starting guard for Tus 59 HammStars of the Second Regional League Gruppe 2 Nordrhein-Westfalen Division.

Donahue received his B.A. in history from Assumption in 2012 and his MBA in 2015. He was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District First-Team selection and a 2011-12 Northeast-10 Second-Team pick.
