Doty signs contract extension at Houston Christian

Houston Christian University and Craig Doty, Ann and James Sears Bryant Head Men’s Basketball Coach, have agreed to a three-year contract extension that locks Doty in as the Huskies’ head coach through the 2029-30 season.

“I’m deeply grateful to President Sloan and Athletic Director Steve Moniaci for the continued trust and belief they’ve shown in me and our vision,” said Doty. “Building a competitive Division I college basketball program is equal parts exciting and demanding, but over the past 20 months—through every win and every challenge—this administration has been unwavering in its support, positivity, and empathy. They’ve empowered our staff with the autonomy and support to do things the right way as we grow the program.”

Currently in his second season, Doty’s Huskies own a 5-4 record this season and opened Southland Conference play with an 85-76 road win at New Orleans this past Saturday. In his first year at the helm, Doty guided HCU to a 12-20 overall record and a 9-11 mark in SLC play, doubling the program’s win total from the year prior and securing the highest SLC win total since the 2016-17 season.

“We are thrilled to extend Coach Doty’s contract,” added Sloan. “He is an outstanding leader and has already produced great results. He and his family are a wonderful fit for the university in every way.”

“Coach Doty has proven himself, along with his family, to be a perfect fit within the HCU community and as the leader of our men’s basketball program” said Moniaci. “The growth and improvement by our men’s basketball program in the year and nine months since his hire have made this extension an easy decision.”

In his first 41 games, Doty has led HCU to three non-conference wins over Division I opponents with the last such win coming in 2018. Doty took over a program that finished the 2023-24 season at 358 in the season’s final NET rankings and he now has his program more than 100 spots better at 249.

Off the court, the Huskies have participated in a number of youth-based community service projects, including a blood cancer drive, reading at elementary schools, working with foster kids and adopting a child in need.

While maintaining a team GPA above 3.0, the HCU men’s basketball program has also recorded a perfect APR rating since Doty’s arrival.

Additionally, since Doty’s arrival there have been notable improvements to the Huskies’ facilities. Sharp Gym boasts brand new LED scorer’s tables on both side of the floor while locker room and office upgrades include new flooring, seating and a nutrition station for the men’s basketball program.
