Dowell named Director of Basketball Scouting at VMI

 VMI Basketball Head Coach Andrew Wilson named Drew Dowell as his program’s Director of Scouting.

Dowell comes to the Institute by way of the LSU men’s basketball program where he served the past season as a graduate assistant. Among many responsibilities, he assisted the coaching staff with daily practices, film preparation, scouting reports, player development and all gameday-related activities. He also assisted the crew with recruiting operations, video breakdown, operations, team travel and equipment management.

“I’m very excited about the addition of Drew to our coaching staff,” Wilson said. “He will bring great value to our program and has served in many different roles early in his coaching career. Drew has great energy and is very passionate about player development. He comes highly recommended from the LSU coaching staff and we are fortunate have him join us at VMI.”

In addition, he led a group of 15 student managers in assistant with skill development workouts and off-court operations management.

Prior to LSU, he worked the 2021-22 season as an assistant athletic director at the Fulton Science Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, where he managed coach evaluations and interview processes, scheduling for 15 teams across six sports, game operations and marketing.
 
From 2017 to 2021, Dowell served as an assistant coach and trainer at The-Skill-Factory in Atlanta where he worked in the skill development of over 50 NBA players, 60 NBA G-League athletes and multiple players who earned pro contracts in top international leagues. Some of the notable alumni include Deni Avdija, Wendell Carter, Jr., Malik Beasley, Shelvin Mack, Derrick Favors and Joe Johnson.
 
During this time, he also served as a camp director and head of skill development at Du Feng Basketball in southeastern China.
 
Dowell played collegiate basketball at the College of Coastal Georgia from 2012-14 before transferring to Southern Wesleyan in 2015.
 
He also played a graduate year at Solent University in Southampton, England, during the 2020-21 season while earning a master’s degree in sports management.
 
Dowell earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management in 2016 from the University of Georgia in 2016 prior to achieving his master’s degree from Solent in 2021.
