Dunson added to Western Illinois staff as DBO

Dodie Dunson, a former standout basketball player at Bradley, has joined the Western Illinois Athletic Department as Director of Basketball Operations. He will officially begin his duties on August 1.

Dunson will oversee the day-to-day operations of the men’s and women’s basketball program, recruiting visits, team travel, video exchange, direct summer camps, supervise student managers, and oversee academic progress of the student-athletes.

Dunson joins the Leathernecks after serving as the assistant basketball coach at Wabash Valley College last season. He was in charge of the recruiting and day-to-day operations. From 2011 to 2013 he worked as the boys varsity coach at Bloomington High School.

"I’m really excited to be part of the Western Illinois University family. I am looking forward to working with Coach (Billy) Wright and the coaching staff to continue to build a winning culture," said Dunson.

Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, Dunson began his collegiate playing career at Iowa State. He transferred to Vincennes University, helping the Trailblazers to a 28-6 record. He was named MVP of the National Junior College Association of America District 3 Tournament, and led the team to an appearance in the 2008 NJCAA National Tournament.

He continued his career at Bradley University and in 2009 was a member of the team that qualified and finished runner-up at the College Insider Tournament (CIT) postseason tournament.

As a senior, Dunson was voted Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team. He made the Dean’s List at Bradley, was a Lowe’s Senior CLASS ‘Top 10’ finalist, and member of the Illinois Kappa Chapter of the National Athlete Honors Society (Chi Alpha Sigma).

"I’ve known Dodie for some time and he comes highly recommended by college coaches and administrators at the highest level," said Wright. He’s deeply connected and respected throughout the state of Illinois, which will be a tremendous asset to our program and the University. Dodie is a man of high character and integrity. He will be an excellent mentor to the young men in our program."
