University of Nevada head men’s basketball coach Eric Musselman has added Brandon Dunson to his staff as an assistant coach for the Wolf Pack.  Dunson fills the spot previously held by Johnny Jones who accepted the head coaching position at Texas Southern last week.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Brandon into our Nevada Wolf Pack family,” Musselman said. “When we started the search for an assistant coach, all roads led to Brandon. His reputation within the coaching community is that of an energetic, hardworking, coach with high IQ basketball mind. More importantly, people that are close with Brandon said he is a relationship-oriented individual, which is something that will serve him well with our own Pack players and on the recruiting trail. He has been an integral part of Coach Haase’s staff at Stanford over the past two seasons, and came highly recommended from their staff. We believe we hit a home run with him in all aspects in our search.”

“I am very excited to join the Nevada Wolf Pack coaching staff and hit the ground running, Dunson said. “The job that coach Musselman has done at Nevada has been nothing short of outstanding. I cannot thank Jerod Haase and Stanford enough for the opportunity to represent their program and university. It wasn’t an easy decision to leave such an amazing place, but being in the Bay Area the last two years has given me the opportunity to keep a close eye on the Nevada Wolf Pack program and when the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t turn it down.”

Dunson comes to the Wolf Pack after two seasons as the Directory of Basketball Development at Stanford.  This past season he helped the Cardinal reach the postseason for the first time in three years.  Stanford reached the NIT second round and won 19 games.  The Cardinal won 11 Pac-12 games and finished third in the conference standings.  Stanford had three all-conference selections.

At Stanford, he was responsible for aiding in the implementation of the program’s recruiting strategies and opponent scouting. He has also oversaw the program’s video services.

Prior to joining head coach Jerod Haase’s staff at Stanford, Dunson spent three seasons as the associate head coach at Arizona Christian University. Under head coach Jeff Rutter at ACU, Dunson handled the program’s recruiting and scouting responsibilities. He also oversaw the prospect development roster and served as a liaison with the university. During his time on the staff, the Firestorm surpassed the school’s all-time wins record on two different occasions and elevated ACU to as high as a No. 4 national ranking. ACU qualified for three NAIA National Championship Tournaments and secured the first two tournament wins in program history.

“Brandon is a rising star in the business,” Haase said.  “He has all the tools of a great assistant coach.  Recruiting, player relations, and basketball knowledge are all in his wheel house.  I am truly excited to watch him grow as a coach and help Nevada reach their basketball goals.”

Dunson also worked as a professional basketball consultant and served as the Associate Program Director for the Team Illinois Education & Athletics Program.

A Bloomington, Ill. native, Dunson began his collegiate career at Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill. He played one season at Arizona State, where he appeared in 18 games and made two starts during the 2010-11 season. The guard posted a season-best 14 points in a win at Oregon during his one year with the Sun Devils. He played his final season at Azusa Pacific University, earning All-America honors and leading the program to a 24-8 overall record and No. 7 national ranking.

He went on to play professionally with Soles de Mexicali of Mexico’s Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) league.

Dunson returned to ASU and completed his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2012.
