Earl Contract Extended Through 2023 at VMI

VMI Athletics Director Dr. Dave Diles announced today that the contract of VMI head basketball coach Dan Earl has been extended through the 2022-23 season.

“First and foremost, Dan is an incredible “fit” at VMI and comprehensively supports the mission of the Institute,” said Diles. “In addition, if you know basketball, you appreciate his outstanding recruiting and teaching.  He’s a gifted coach and will continue to advance our basketball program.  I’m thrilled to continue VMI’s relationship with the Earl family.”

Earl recently completed his fifth year as head coach of the Keydets. Entering the 2019-20 season with a roster that had to replenish scoring production from three starters who averaged double figures in previous seasons, Earl molded a young squad that included six true freshmen into a competitive unit that turned into one of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the country. VMI ranked second in the nation in three-pointers made per game (10.9) and also led the Southern Conference in assists per game (16.0) and assist/turnover ratio (+1.3).

The Keydets established a new SoCon tournament record when they knocked in 18 three-pointers in the 96-78 win over Samford March 6 in first round action.

“I am extremely grateful to Dr. Diles and General Peay for this most recent extension,” said Earl.  “It means so much to me to have their support and that they continue to believe in our vision for VMI Basketball and the direction that we are taking the program.  I would also like to thank my staff and our great group of young cadet-athletes.  They have great character, an awesome work ethic, and represent the Institute with great morals and values – the VMI way.  We will continue to work hard and improve to achieve the success that we all want to see.  I am extremely excited about the future of VMI Basketball.”
