Matt Wilson has been announced as the new assistant coach for the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team after serving as a graduate assistant at Baylor University for the last two seasons. He joins Interim Head Coach Stott Carter, who helped guide the Hounds to the postseason in each of the last four seasons.
"We are very fortunate to have a man like Matt Wilson in the Greyhound basketball program," said Carter. "Throughout his life he has placed an emphasis on the balance between athletics and academics which is seen by him having already completed an MBA from Rice and a Masters of Teaching from Baylor. There is no question that he will help the Greyhounds achieve success both on and off the court."
Wilson was part of the coaching staff, which propelled the Bears to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2013-14 campaign, which followed a NIT Championship in 2012-13. He also worked with several players who were taken in the NBA draft or played professionally overseas.
Prior to Baylor, Wilson earned an MBA from Rice University, in Houston, Texas. While at Rice he coached at a nearby high school. Wilson did his undergraduate work at American University (Washington, DC). He was a starter on the American University basketball team led the Eagles to the NCAA Division I tournament, twice.
"Matt Wilson did a tremendous job for us at Baylor while he was a part of our program," said Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew. Matt possesses all the characteristics necessary to be successful. He is hard working, responsible, loyal, has great knowledge and most importantly, has high character. He will be a great asset to Coach Carter and Eastern New Mexico University."
"Matt is everything you would want in a young coach," said Jeff Van Gundy, the former head coach of the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets. "He is hardworking, dedicated, loyal, and very bright. All of his experiences have prepared him well with the players that are there and the ones he will encounter on the recruiting trail. Most importantly, he is the type of person that you would want to coach your son and marry your daughter."
