After three seasons with the Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team, Jared Barrett has stepped down as head coach of the Mountaineers. Barrett announced his resignation on Tuesday afternoon after compiling an overall record of 47-44.
EOU is coming off a season in which it finished 15-16 overall, including a 10-10 mark in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play. The Mountaineers exited the conference tournament in the quarterfinals following an 80-71 loss to third-seeded Warner Pacific in Portland, Ore.
On Jan. 16, 2016, Barrett coached the squad to a 74-64 upset triumph over then-ranked No. 12 Southern Oregon University in La Grande, and the Mountaineers followed the win with a blowout victory over I-84 rival College of Idaho.
“We want to thank Jared for his dedication to EOU Athletics,” said Director of Athletics Anji Weissenfluh. “In his time at Eastern, coach Barrett has been able to recruit outstanding student-athletes who have been great ambassadors for EOU. We wish Jared nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”
Weissenfluh said a national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
Barrett served as the assistant coach at Southern Utah University for one season before joining EOU. While at Southern Utah, Barrett was a key recruiter and assisted with scheduling, scouting and game-day preparation.
Prior to joining Southern Utah’s staff, he spent three seasons with NCAA Division I Washington State University. Barrett served as the coordinator of basketball operations and was responsible for executing summer camps, coordinating team travel and overseeing academics among student-athletes. Barrett was an assistant coach at Sacramento State for six seasons before traveling to Orem, Utah, to become the assistant coach at Utah Valley University.
In 1998, Barrett began his coaching career at EOU as the junior varsity men’s basketball coach. For two seasons, he implemented the team’s playbook, conducted tryouts, and scheduled games. He was also responsible for the school’s youth basketball camps and served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach.
During his collegiate playing days, Barrett was a two-sport athlete (baseball and basketball) at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wa. He transferred to EOU and was named the most valuable player following the 1996-97 basketball campaign.
A native of Rexburg, Idaho, Barrett earned his bachelor’s in physical education from EOU in 1997.
