Elwyn McRoy named Assistant Basketball Coach at Colorado Christian

Colorado Christian Athletics is pleased to welcome Elwyn McRoy as the new men’s basketball assistant coach. McRoy is an experienced coach who has spent 25 years in the coaching world, spending time at the junior college and division I levels, including a majority of his career being spent recruiting and coaching division I players.

Known as a top recruiter, Elwyn has spent time coaching and recruiting at many programs that include Georgia Southern, Southern University, Arkansas State, Iowa State, University of Texas Rio Grande, Coppin State, Washington State and Coastal Carolina University.

“This has been a long process that has brought forward a pool of tremendous candidates. Our program is in a fantastic position to take another step forward in 2024 and we wanted to bring in a coach that would elevate our program on and off the court. After a lot of conversations and prayer we believe that Coach McRoy is that person,” Head Coach Liam Simmons said.

McRoy has a talent for finding student-athletes that are the right fit for the university and team, and he has brought in top level players in the Sun Belt, Pac-12, Big 12 and SWAC to help shape the future of each program he has coached with.

“As a coach he has over 20+ years of college experience and 15+ years of NCAA D1 experience having spent time coaching in the PAC 12, Big 12, Sunbelt, SWAC and others. Coach McRoy is a high level recruiter and will continue to attract top talent to CCU, and he is also a great defensive tactician and teacher and I believe the Cougars will immediately improve defensively with his input. Off the court coach McRoy is a great person who loves the Lord and has a heart for building up men and serving others,” said Simmons.

McRoy is looking forward to coaching at a Christian university and will work with the young men on the team to build them into high level players but also Men of God.

“Being hired at CCU means to me that I have finally found a fit where my values align with the institution. There is nothing more important to me than being God’s servant through being a basketball coach and teaching good values. It also means I’m back doing what I truly love, which is coaching young men and recruiting them. I have missed it this past year that I was out of the business,” McRoy said.

McRoy has a passion for the game that is evident, and he played his college ball first at Butler Community College followed by Hutchinson Community College. In 1994, McRoy helped Hutchinson capture the NJCAA National Championship. He then went on to close his playing career at Cleveland State where he learned his Bachelor’s Degree.

“My Goal is to help our young men achieve success not only on the court but off as well. With my many experiences I hope to be a positive influence on them on and off the court. However I can be of help to Coach Simmons, it’s important to me to help him be a successful head coach and I’m here to help him steer this program in the right direction. We aren’t hoping to win, we are expecting to win both on the floor and off the floor. My other goal is to continue recruiting the type of young man that fits the mold of the University. Character means a lot and we will continue recruiting the most talented young men who fit, wanting to be servants of the Lord and lead the right way,” said McRoy.

Simmons reflected his thankfulness for his past assistant coaches and his new one as well, saying “I have been so fortunate to work with great assistants like Troy Hammel and Chris Dendinger over the last few years. I am excited to add coach McRoys name to the list of fantastic coaches who have coached with me here at CCU. I am excited to get to work with him and this new group.”
