Mount St. Mary’s University has announced that head men’s basketball coach Dan Engelstad has resigned to pursue other opportunities (UPDATE: He’s headed to Syracuse as an assistant). A national search for the next men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
“Thank you Mount St. Mary’s for an amazing six years,” said Engelstad. “It was an honor to be your head coach, to lead the team to the 2021 NCAA Tournament, and transition the move to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. I am grateful for the support from President Trainor, Athletic Directors Brad Davis and Lynne Robinson, our staff, players, and our tremendous fans. The Mount is a special place and my family and I will always treasure our time here.”
Named the 22nd coach in program history on May 9, 2018, Engelstad led the Mount to the 2021 NCAA Tournament after wins over Wagner and Bryant in the Northeast Conference Tournament. Engelstad finishes his Mount career fifth in school history with 72 wins at the school. Engelstad came to the Mount from Southern Vermont College, where he won 104 games and a pair of conference titles. Engelstad began his career as an assistant coach at the Mount from 2008-10, helping lead the team to the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
“I want to thank Dan for his leadership as our basketball coach for the last six years,” said Director of Athletics Brad Davis. “In my short time at the Mount, I have valued his friendship, and I wish him, Camille, and their three daughters, Laney, Elise and Keira all the best going forward.”
“Dating back to Coach Phelan, the Mount’s reputation as a basketball school is well known nationwide. We are in the midst of substantial improvements to our facilities and resources and look forward to the future of Mount Basketball.”
