ESPN: Don Meyer recovering

Former Northern State coach Don Meyer is recovering in a Minneapolis-area hospital after having a pacemaker implanted.

His wife, Carmen Meyer, told the American News, of Aberdeen, S.D., that the surgery on Wednesday went well.

The 67-year-old Meyer also recently had three heart valves replaced with mechanical ones and had a hole in his heart repaired. His heart problems are related to cancer that doctors discovered after a 2008 car accident that cost Meyer part of his left leg.

Meyer retired from coaching two years ago with an NCAA record 923 victories. The NCAA considers Meyer the winningest men’s college basketball coach, even though his career was split between the NAIA and NCAA. Harry Statham at NAIA McKendree University has more than 1,000 victories.
