Tech men’s basketball coach Evan Conti has made his first hire.
Former Mercy head coach and Adelphi assistant Sean O’Connor has joined the Bears as an assistant coach.
O’Connor most recently served as associate head girls basketball coach at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset.
He served on the Adelphi men’s basketball staff from the 2010-11 through 2012-13 seasons. During that time, the Panthers earned two NCAA Tournament appearances and a Northeast-10 Conference regular-season and postseason title.
As head coach at Mercy in 2009-10, he transformed a club team into a Division II men’s basketball program and recruited future All-East Coast Conference players Bryan Van Cott and Tyler Jones.
“Sean O’Connor brings experience and success coaching at the D-II level,” Conti said. “His enthusiasm and passion for basketball will be contagious throughout our entire program and will be an instrumental part of creating a winning culture.”
O’Connor earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from St. John’s in 1988 and later graduated from the New York City Police Academy and Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He spent 15 years in law enforcement, including working with the NYPD/FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. He also was a deputized U.S. Marshal.
“I have known Coach Conti since his early high school playing days, and recruited him as a collegiate coach,” O’Connor said. “I have personally observed how hard he works on and off the basketball court, and I am excited to join New York Tech as a member of his staff.
“Having coached in the ECC and NE-10, and knowing the reputation of New York Tech both academically and athletically, I am excited for the opportunity to be a part of the basketball program and anticipate having great success.”
