Fennerty named Assistant Basketball Coach at William & Mary

William & Mary head men’s basketball coach Dane Fischer announced the addition of Jimmy Fenerty to the Tribe staff as an assistant coach on Monday. Fenerty joins the Green and Gold after spending the previous four seasons at Temple University and has eight years of Division I experience as an assistant coach.

“We are very excited to have Jimmy Fenerty join our coaching staff,” Fischer said. “Coach Fenerty has great experience at high-level academic institutions and has been very successful at recruiting and developing players over the course of his career. He will be an excellent fit within our athletic department and our campus community.”

In each of the last two years, Fenerty helped the Owls to 10 wins in American Athletic Conference play, including an upset win at No. 1 Houston, 56-55, on Jan. 22, 2023. The Owls also picked up wins over No. 16 Villanova, VCU and Rutgers during the non-conference portion of the schedule in 2022-23. Temple won 17 games in 2021-22 and followed with 16 in 2022-23.

“Jimmy has worked for some of the most respected coaches in the business in Fran Dunphy, Fran O’Hanlon and Aaron McKie,” Fischer added. “He has great connections up and down the east coast and works tirelessly throughout the recruiting process.”

During his time as an assistant at Temple, Owls earned four All-AAC honors, three AAC All-Rookie Team selections, eight AAC Players of the Week, five AAC Rookies of the Week, two NABC All-District Team choices and the 2021 AAC Sportsmanship Award winner. The Owls’ 2021 recruiting class was ranked No. 46 nationally by Rivals.com.

“So much of his coaching success has been a result of the relationships he builds with the players,” Fischer said. “Coach Fenerty is an excellent mentor as well as a tremendous coach on the floor.”

Fenerty also spent four years as an assistant coach in the Patriot League at Lafayette College. With the Leopards, he served as the recruiting coordinator. He recruited and mentored 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Alex Petrie and 2019 third team All-Patriot League player Justin Jaworski.

Fenerty, the son of Hall of Fame Germantown Academy coach Jim Fenerty, graduated from Dickinson College in 2013 with a degree in policy management. He helped the Red Devils to a school record 21 wins during his senior season. Dickinson won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. During his undergraduate career, he worked as a counselor at various summer basketball camps, including Temple, Hoop Group, Rutgers, Lafayette, Dickinson and Germantown Academy.

Fenerty started his collegiate coaching career as a graduate manager at Temple in 2013-15. He helped to design offseason individual workouts and assisted with recruiting endeavors. Additionally, he organized the team camp and oversaw the daily operations of the program as a whole. He earned his master’s degree from Temple in 2015 in educational leadership.
