Bethel University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Zach Filzen is excited to announce the completion of his coaching staff for the upcoming year welcoming assistants Joel Cline, Cameron Jones and David Leafblad.
Filzen was named to the helm of the Royals program on September 7 after spending the last three years at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.
Joel Cline joins the staff as a full-time assistant after spending the previous two years at St. Nobert College following a one-year stint at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Cline is fimilar with the Twin Cities after a four-year playing career with North Central University. Cline is found in the Rams’ record books ranking fifth all-time with 660 rebounds and 6.4 rebounding average, top-10 in free throws made and sixth in career starts. In his senior year he became the 24th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-career point mark.
Cameron Jones comes to Bethel after spending time at Cretin Derham Hall as an assistant, helping the Raiders complete back-to-back state appearances. Jones also trains players of all different skill levels for over four years through Jones Basketball Academy and Minnesota heat Hoops. He is currently an elementary school teach in the Minneapolis Public Schools system. Jones received his masters in education from the University of Minnesota after earning his bachelors at Minnesota State, Mankato.
David Leafblad, a graduate of Bethel, joins the program following four seasons as an assistant at St. Olaf where he helped with the program’s recruiting as well as game and practice planning. During his time with the program, the Oles made the MIAC Playoffs in all three seasons the tournament was held and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017-18. Prior to his timeat St. Olaf, Leafblad, who coaches AAU for Minnesota Select, was an assistant coach for the boys varsity team at Blaine High School. He also coaches a variety of basketball camps and is a basketball instructor for the Minnesota School of Basketball.
