The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball program is excited to announce the hiring of Tyler Danielson as the new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach heading into the 2021-22 season.
Danielson comes to Fort Lewis after spending three seasons with Missouri Western University of the MIAA, where he was an integral part of the turnaround effort for a program that had gone 13-42 the two years prior to him being on staff.
He spent the first two years as a graduate assistant before taking over as the lead assistant for the 2020-21. The Griffons finished with a 14-11 record in 2020-21, earning a third-place finish in the MIAA and the program’s first NCAA Division II National Tournament berth in 11 seasons. The Griffons were ranked as high as No. 16 in the NABC Top-25 Coaches Poll; the first time the program had been nationally ranked since 2001-02.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Ty Danielson join our program. He has very deep Division II roots, both as a player and coach,” said FLC head men’s basketball coach, Bob Pietrack. “Ty has established himself as a relentless recruiter and one of the top young assistants in Division II basketball. He will play pivotal role in all aspects of our program moving forward. I am excited for our alumni and loyal local supports to get to know him.”
Prior to his tenure at Missouri Western, Danielson was a four-year standout at guard for the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He played in 119 games for the Lopers, making 95 starts, and earned All-MIAA Honor Mention honors his junior and senior seasons while becoming a four-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member.
Danielson left Nebraska-Kearney as one of the most accomplished shooters in school history. His 196 made 3-pointers are the third most all-time at UNK, while his career free-throw percentage (82.7%) ranks fourth and his 1,301 career points are the 23rd most in Lopers’ history.
