Florida Southern Men’s Basketball head coach Linc Darner has announced changes to his coaching staff for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

Among the changes was the promotion of Ben Swank to the program’s top assistant coach after serving as the No. 2 assistant during the 2013-14 season and the addition of former Moccasin two-time All-Sunshine State Conference performer Seth Evans as the team’s No. 2 assistant coach.

Swank’s promotion was necessitated after former assistant Richard Davis stepped down from his position in July due to pursue other opportunities out of state, while Evans returns to FSC after spending last year serving an internship at Florida Gulf Coast University. Both coaches have already begun their new roles at Florida Southern.

“I hated to see Rich leave our program after one year as he had worked for me in the past,” Darner said about Davis’ departure. “I am excited, though, to see Ben move up into Rich’s spot and I’m also excited to see Seth return to our program.”

Since becoming the Moccasins head coach prior to the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Swank will be the sixth different top assistant coach Darner has had in his time at FSC.

Swank came to Lakeland during the summer of 2013 after spending the 2012-13 season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

“Ben did an outstanding job last season as our No. 2 assistant and he is ready for this next step,” said Darner, who has led the Mocs to seven consecutive 20-plus win seasons.

Prior to getting into coaching, Swank, who graduated with cum laude honors from Edinboro University in 2011, was a four-year lettermen in football as a free safety at Edinboro. As a football player with the Scots, he served as the team captain as a junior in 2010 and was named a Second-Team Academic All-American in 2008. He helped lead Edinboro to the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs as a sophomore in 2009. The 2009 Fighting Scots team finished with a 9-4 record.

Along with playing four years of football at Edinboro, Swank lettered in basketball in 2011-12. In his only season of basketball, Swank played in 16 games as the back-up point guard and helped lead the team to a 13-13 overall record. He shot 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point line in those 16 games.

The Edinboro, Pa., native has also served as a counselor at numerous individual and team basketball camps the past three years. His father, Stan Swank, is currently the women’s head basketball coach at Edinboro and has compiled a 493-274 record in 27 seasons as is among the Top 20 active Division II women’s coaches in career wins.

Swank earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Edinboro in 2011 and also earned a minor in coaching from his alma mater.

Evans returns to Lakeland after lettering for the Mocs from 2011-13. In his two years with the Mocs after transferring from Wisconsin-Green Bay, he scored 1,096 points, which is currently 25th on the school’s all-time scoring list. In addition to scoring 1,096 points, he also stand third on the school’s all-time list for made three-pointers (215) and is fourth on the school’s career three-point field goal percentage list (42.3 percent).

“I am glad to have Seth return back to FSC as one of my assistants. He had a tremendous two years here as a player and will be aid us in his new role,” Darner added. “He will be beneficial in working with our guards and also in the recruiting of transfers, since that’s what he was.”

In his two years at FSC, he was a two-time All-SSC selection, a two-time SSC Tournament MVP and was named to the SSC All-Newcomer Team in 2012 and was named a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection as a senior in 2012-13.

Evans, who is a native of Marseilles, Ill., scored 549 points and scored in double figures in 29 of 33 games during his senior campaign en route to earning Daktronics All-South Region honors and also being named the South Regional Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He finished the season ranked fourth in the SSC in scoring (16.6 points per game) and led the SSC in free throw percentage (89.1 percent), was fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (42.0 percent) and led the league in 3-pointers made per game (3.3) and established a new single-season mark for 3-point field goals made as he hit 110 to better the old mark of 106 set by Tim Gatz in 1995.

As a junior in 2011-12, he averaged a league-leading 18.2 points per game and was the NCAA Division II national statistical champion in 3-point field goals made per game as he averaged 3.5 makes per game. He also led the SSC in 3-point field goal percentage (42.7 percent), 3-point field goals made (105) and he set a new school record for consecutive free throws made as he hit 30 in a row from Nov. 22 through Dec. 8.

Evans earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida Southern in 2013.
