Legendary Boston College standout Danya Abrams is returning to his alma mater to serve in a newly developed role of Director of Roster Management, it was announced today by the Clement and Elizabeth Izzi Head Men’s Basketball Coach Earl Grant.
“We are really excited to have Danya join our staff. He is one of the most decorated players to ever put on the BC jersey and his experiences as a student-athlete and as a professional will bring great perspective to our program,” Grant said. “All of our players will benefit from his mentorship and guidance tremendously. With the ever-changing landscape of college athletics, we felt it was necessary to create a position that would focus on managing the roster and the needs of our players. Danya brings great versatility to the position and I look forward to him joining our staff as we look to push the program to greater Heights.”
This new position will serve in a general manager-type role, providing critical direction to the coaching staff to ensure the recruitment and retention of the best possible student-athletes. Abrams will create and maintain a database of transfer portal prospects and will develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of constituencies including relevant high school and AAU coaches, sports agencies, agents, NBA and Developmental League general managers, and others involved in the NIL aspect of basketball recruiting. Abrams will also assist in the creation of a system by which NIL resources are allocated to current and incoming basketball student-athletes and, per NCAA rules, will also serve as one of the program’s countable on-court coaches and off-campus recruiters.
“I am incredibly honored and excited to serve in this new role of Director of Roster Management with the men’s basketball program at Boston College,” said Abrams. “As a former player who proudly wore the Maroon and Gold, this opportunity feels like a homecoming. My years on the court here were some of the most formative of my life, and now, I look forward to contributing to the program and our student-athletes in a new and impactful way.”
As a player at the Heights, Abrams is one of only two players in Boston College history to tally at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career. A key contributor to the Eagles’ 1994 run to the Elite Eight as a freshman, the 6-7 forward earned Big East All-Rookie team accolades. In each of his next three seasons, he was a three-time All-Big East First Team selection, helping guide BC to the regular season and tournament championships during the 1996-97 campaign.
Abrams led Boston College to three trips to the NCAA Tournament during his career, scoring in double figures in 101 of his 122 games, including six games with at least 30 points. He finished his career with 2,053 points and 1,029 rebounds, ranking him seventh and third, respectively on BC’s career records list. He also ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in field goals made (671) and free throws made (698).
He was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2009 and served as the analyst on BC’s radio network for the past 12 seasons.
