Former NBA Standout Todd Day named Interim Head Basketball Coach at D2 Edward Waters

Edward Waters University (EWU) announced today that Todd Day—former NBA standout, University of Arkansas All-American, McDonald’s All American, and championship-winning collegiate head coach—has been appointed Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the 2025–2026 season, effective November 18, 2025.

Day enters the role as one of the most accomplished basketball figures ever to lead the Tigers program. A first-round NBA Draft selection, Day enjoyed a distinguished professional career with the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Prior to the NBA, he starred at the University of Arkansas, where he earned All-American honors and became the Razorbacks’ all-time leading scorer under legendary Hall of Fame coach Nolan Richardson.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Todd Day to Edward Waters University,” said Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr., President & CEO of EWU. “His extraordinary pedigree—as a McDonald’s All American, SEC legend, NBA veteran, and proven collegiate head coach—represents a major moment for our athletics program. He understands what excellence looks like at every level, and he brings a leadership philosophy grounded in discipline, accountability, and holistic student development.”

Day also brings an impressive record of NAIA coaching success from Philander Smith College (now Philander Smith University). Under his leadership, the program achieved back-to-back 20-plus win seasons in 2022–2023 and 2023–2024, culminating in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in 2024. His teams became known for toughness, tempo, defensive intensity, and strong academic standards.

“I am honored and excited to join the Edward Waters University family,” Day said. “EWU is a university on the rise with a proud athletic tradition. I look forward to working with our student-athletes, shaping a competitive environment, and building a program that reflects the excellence, pride, and mission of this great institution.”

EWU Interim Vice President & Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Ms. Ashley Conner, celebrated the appointment. “Coach Day is a transformational leader with a rare combination of elite playing experience, coaching success, and commitment to student-athlete growth,” Conner said. “His vision aligns perfectly with our goal of elevating EWU Athletics to new levels of excellence as a competitive NCAA Division II program.”

As interim head coach, Day will assume full responsibility for player development, recruiting, competitive preparation, staffing, and community engagement.

Edward Waters University competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). As Florida’s first Historically Black College or University, EWU continues to experience historic momentum across academics, enrollment, athletics, and institutional prominence.
