Alaska Anchorage head coach Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that one of the top performers in program history has returned to the Seawolf basketball program as former guard Kyle Fossman has been hired as an assistant coach.
A four-year letterwinner from 2010-14, Fossman scored 1,237 points in green & gold, finishing his career as UAA’s record holder in virtually every three-point shooting category. The Haines native was a first-team all-conference performer as a junior and honorable mention as a senior, helping the Seawolves to winning records in each of his seasons, including a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. “We are very excited to welcome Kyle back to Seawolf Basketball,” Osborne said. “He is someone I have a ton of respect for, and I look forward to helping him grow in the coaching profession. As someone with experience in our program, he knows what we value and the culture of our program. Kyle has a great understanding of how to play the game and I have been impressed watching him teach the game during camps and clinics the past few years. In addition, with his recent experience playing at UAA and in the GNAC, he will be a great resource for our players as they navigate through the season.”
A three-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic performer, Fossman graduated with his bachelor’s in accounting in 2014, before playing one season of professional basketball with the Fraport Skyliners in Germany.
From 2015-19, Fossman was active in the Haines sports community as both a basketball coach and official, along with founding the AKtive summer skills youth basketball camp.
“Many former athletes stay in coaching because they don’t want to ‘leave the locker room,’ but struggle with the non-glamorous aspects of coaching they do not see as players. Kyle understands what he is getting into, and he is embracing his role on our staff, and the duties that go with the position. I am positive he is going to grow into an outstanding basketball coach on whatever level he chooses in the future.”
The 2008 3A State Player of the Year, he was inducted into the Alaska School Activities Association’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
