Tuskegee University head men’s basketball coach, Benjy Taylor completed his staff with the hiring of former Tulane Green Wave standout, Kevin Sims. Sims joins Taylor after playing professionally in Morocco, Iceland, Romania, and Hungary.
“We are excited to have Kevin join our family,” TU head men’s coach Benjy Taylor said. “He will be a valuable asset to our young men as we embark on this journey.”
The Jackson, Miss. native played in 93 career games with the Green Wave and holds career averages of 12.0 points, 3.7 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game. Among career leaders in scoring, he finished 17th in that category, assists (3rd), three-point field goals (4th) and assist-turnover ratio (6.0/1.40). Sims completed his career as one of only three players in school history to lead the team in assists for three straight seasons, and is just one of two players to record 100+ assists in three straight seasons.
As a junior, Sims was listed as a Bob Cousy Award candidate. That same season, he started in all 31 games and led the team in scoring (13.0), assists (4.0), three-point field goals (51), free throws (110) and minutes played (35.0). He reached double figures in 22 games, and posted seven 20+ point scoring games, which were the most by a Green Wave player at the time in over five seasons. Sims displayed his ability to make shots from beyond the arc after accounting for 51 three pointers during his junior year. A number that ranks ninth on the school’s single season charts. Sims made five from downtown and finished with 23 points against East Carolina in the first round of the C-USA Tournament.
At one point in his career, Sims had a streak of 80 consecutive games with an assist.
Sims attended Forest Hill High School and played to a 26-8 record, making an appearance in the state semifinals while averaging 26.2 points per game as a senior. He was a first team all-state selection for all classifications in Mississippi and was selected to play in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Game. Sims scored a career-high 42 points against Brandon High School.
