GW men’s basketball head coach Chris Caputo announced on Tuesday that Lamont Franklin will remain on the program’s staff and now serve as the Director of Player Development.
“Lamont Franklin‘s experience as a student-athlete, coach at both the high school and college level and in the corporate world at Microsoft will be invaluable for our student-athletes,” Caputo said. “Lamont brings his DMV Basketball upbringing, time at Miami and knowledge of GW to give our staff a unique view of what success looks like at GW.”
Franklin joined the Buff & Blue last September as Special Assistant to the Head Coach and Director of Scouting. In that role, Franklin oversaw advanced scouting of future opponents and led the data analysis for the purposes of program and player development while contributing to game strategy and practice planning.
“As a DMV native, I am very familiar with the rich tradition of George Washington University and the basketball program,” Franklin said. “I was blessed to return home and join the program last September and look forward to continuing as a member of Coach Caputo’s staff. Having known Coach over the years as assistant coaches and working together at Miami prior to my arrival to GW, I’m confident that he’s prepared to take this next step in his career and lead our program. I look forward to working to support his vision for our players and GW Basketball.”
A native of Seat Pleasant, Md., and two-time All-Met and All-Prince George’s County selection, Franklin spent four seasons as the Director of Operations at Miami (Fla.). With the Hurricanes, he was responsible for a wide range of duties including, but not limited to, budget management, on-campus recruiting and camps, while serving as a liaison for the program to multiple functions/offices throughout the university.
In his distinguished 20-plus years on the sidelines, he has coached and mentored 26 professional players, including three NBA Draft picks, 17 All-Conference performers and two NCAA leaders in 3-pointers made.
Following a stellar playing career at UNCW, Franklin has made coaching stops at his alma mater, in addition to Howard, Mount St. Mary’s, Florida A&M, Towson and College of Charleston. Franklin started the men’s basketball program at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, N.C., as the program’s first coach before spending time in the corporate world. He returned to coaching in 2015 at Florida A&M before heading to Miami and then the DMV last year.
Franklin owns a bachelor’s degree from UNCW in Business Information Systems and an MBA in Sports Marketing and Management from UNC Charlotte.
