The Citadel basketball head coach Chuck Driesell announced on Wednesday that Ryan Freeberg has joined his staff as an assistant coach.
Freeberg replaces J.D. Powell who accepted the director of basketball operations position at College of Charleston.
"I am excited that we have added Ryan Freeberg to our basketball staff," said Driesell. "He comes to us highly recommended with great experience and knowledge in both the recruiting and basketball phases of the game. He has worked hard in the profession and has developed a strong reputation amongst his peers and I am confident he will come here and be a great asset to our basketball program and The Citadel."
Freeberg spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at College of Charleston, helping the Cougars post a record of 38-29 during that span.
His most impressive season with the Cougars was in 2012-13 when the team finished 24-11 and recorded victories over Boston College, Baylor and Old Dominion. College of Charleston reached the Southern Conference tournament finals before losing to Davidson.
Prior to his stint at CofC, Freeberg served as an assistant coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. Led by eventual Marquette standout Darius Johnson-Odom, who was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers, the Blue Dragons were a combined 98-32 in four years and reached the Region 6 tournament each season.
Freeberg was the assistant basketball coach and athletic director at Patterson Prep School in Lenoir, N.C., from 2006-08. His teams were a combined 69-6 in that span and sent over 20 student-athletes to NCAA Division I programs including Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Marshall, Memphis, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Tennessee.
Before Patterson Prep, Freeberg spent five seasons at Concordia (Minn.) University. After serving as an assistant from 2001-03 he assumed the role of head coach and finished 7-21 in his first year. A year later, Freeberg’s squad improved to 18-11 and reached the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Tournament for the first time in program history.
In his final season, Concordia made its first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional rankings and garnered first-ever votes in the national poll. The Golden Bears eventually reached the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Freeberg played point guard for two seasons at Bethany Lutheran College, leading the Vikings to a 39-11 record and a conference championship before transferring to Minnesota State, Mankato.
He returned to Bethany Lutheran as an assistant coach in 1997 and helped the Vikings capture a Southern Division title in the Minnesota Community College Athletic Conference and make an appearance in the NJCAA Region XIII tournament.
