Following a four-year run as an assistant coach with the Mustang men’s basketball team, it was jointly announced on Wednesday afternoon by the Cal Poly and Peninsula (Wash.) College Athletics Departments that Mitch Freeman has departed the central coast and accepted the head coaching position with the Pirates. Peninsula College is a two-year institution located in Port Angeles, Washington.
During his four seasons (2009-13) with the Mustangs, Freeman helped Cal Poly post a 63-63 record, a 37-29 Big West mark and three finishes in the top half of the conference standings. Cal Poly also reached the semifinals of the Big West Tournament during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. During Freeman’s time, the Mustang program exceeded or matched its win total from the previous season every year – a feat not accomplished at Cal Poly for 41 years.
